Job Description:

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for providing patient care in the provision of employee healthcare services to employees, volunteers, and specified affiliates. Employee health medical services are provided by the NP following established protocols and standards within the NP scope of practice. This is specifically accomplished by performing pre-placement physical assessments and medical surveillance examinations that are job specific, triaging and treating work-related injuries, illnesses, and exposures and performing preventative health measures. The NP orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests to identify and assess the patient’s illness/injury, treatment, and health care needs. The NP documents findings, formulates treatment plans and prognosis based on patient condition. This position also prescribes and administers drugs and vaccinations. The NP may refer patients for specialized health evaluation or treatment. This position also provides health education relative to employee health services and occupational medicine.

This position oversees management of the Employee Health staff and services to include training and development, quality assurance, scheduling coordination, timekeeping, and performance management.

The NP promotes optimum health and safety in the work place and collaborates with other health care professionals (i.e., workers’ compensation specialist, safe patient handling coordinator, infection prevention, safety coordinator, wellness coaches) in assessing and managing health care problems, prevention of injury/illness, and safe return to work. The NP is credentialed via the medical staff process and reports to the Director of Human Resources for administrative direction, policy recommendations, presentations, and staffing questions. In the areas of medical management/treatment, this position reports to the Medical Director of Employee Health Services.

Important dimensions of this position consist of excellence in patient care through observation, assessment, clinical judgment, communication skills and interpersonal relations. Must have demonstrated critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making ability and able to work independently.

Experience

Two years previous experience as a nurse practitioner in occupational health is strongly preferred.

Education

Master’s Degree in Nursing required- Exception Nurse Practitioners’ qualified or certified as an NP in California or any other state prior to January 1, 2008.

Licensure/Certifications

Must be currently licensed in California as an NP and be certified as a nurse practitioner by a recognized national certifying body that has established standards for nurse practitioners to practice in the State of California. Certification from either ANCC or AANP as a nurse practitioner. Furnishing license issued by the Board of Registered Nursing required. American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required.
